Her early experiments with printmaking with the Taller de Gr\u00e1fica Popular resulted in a series of 15 prints titled, The Black Woman (1946-1947) of which the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art is one of only three known American arts institutions to own a full series. In addition to her print and drawing practice, Catlett was also an accomplished sculptor working in stone, wood, and clay in her lengthy career, which spanned over six decades.\r\nTaking The Black Woman series as a point of departure, Heather Nickels will explore Catlett's oeuvre as illustrative of such contemporary phenomena as the \u00abStrongBlackWoman\u00bb (SBW) trope, Afrofemcentrism, and misogynoir. Nickels will offer an alternative reading of the stances, postures, and expressions of Catlett's women, considering the impact of intergenerational trauma, with its roots in chattel slavery, on African Americans. Catherine the Great acquired French seventeenth-century works\r\namong her first purchase of pictures in 1764; more than thirty arrived with the Crozat\r\nde Thiers collection that she bought in 1772, and sixteen arrived with Sir Robert\r\nWalpole's collection from Houghton Hall in 1779. Four famous Claudes were bought\r\nby Catherine's grandson Alexander I from the estate of the late Empress Josephine at\r\nMalmaison in 1815.\r\nMore than a third of the paintings arrived in the Hermitage after the Revolutions\r\nof 1917, some from the collections of noble families established in the eighteenth\r\ncentury (the Yusupovs and the Stroganovs), others from more recent collections\r\nformed by statesmen and the growing wealthy middle class (Myatlev and Oliv). Biffin was later contracted to Mr Dukes, who ran a  travelling sideshow, where Biffin would write and paint in front of an audience. The  crowds who turned up left with a sample of her writing included in the cost of their ticket.\r\nIn her mid-twenties she began formal tuition with a miniature painter, William  Marshall Craig, and from 1816 she set herself up as an independent artist. Biffin travelled extensively, exhibiting her artwork and taking commissions all over the  country, before finally settling in Liverpool. Throughout her long and successful  career, she took commissions from nobility and royalty, and recorded her own  likeness across the years through exquisitely detailed self-portraits. Working closely with the project's advisor - artist Alison Lapper MBE (born with  the same condition as Sarah Biffin 180 years later) - and consultant and contributor - Professor Essaka Joshua (specialist in Disability Studies at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana) - this publication and exhibition seek to celebrate Biffin as a disabled artist who challenged contemporary attitudes to disability.
